Make free calls to anyone with Gmail + Google Voice + VPN

A couple days ago, Google pushed out “Phone Calls” function for Gmail. This service is currently free for calls made to US and Canada users. So Rockia came up with a thought that we can make use of Google’s awesome service and make phone calls to anyone with internet on earth.
Google Voice is now opened to US residents, how can we use it? The answer is VPN. If you don’t know how to set up VPN on Linux server or how to setup VPN clients, I have two posts for you: Easy Installation of PPTP VPN Server on CentOS & How to setup PPTP VPN Client connection
If you need more info on VPN: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network
A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization’s network. It aims to avoid an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can be used by only one organization. The goal of a VPN is to provide the organization with the same secure capabilities but at a much lower cost.
This is all we do — using a VPN to trick Google so you can apply for a Google Voice account and make calls to the “US” users.
What do we need?
1. Gmail account
Google now includes a “Call phone” function to gmail users with limitation to US and Canada users. If you are not in one of the two countries, you need to apply or log into your gmail account through VPN so that you can see the option of making calls to US and Canada.
2. Google Voice account
Google Voice is now open to US users. When you submit your application, you will received a unique US telephone number. That means once you are on your VPN connection, you are visibly in the states (if the VPN server is in the US).
What to do next?
- You have to kinda make the Google Voice account public or ask your target phone answerer to apply for a Google Voice account. And then write down the Google Voice phone number.
- Log in your Gmail account. Once again, keep your VPN connection active or else you won’t be able to see the “phone call” function.
- Use the “phone call” function to call the Google Voice phone number you just wrote down.
- Enjoy the free unlimited global call.
What to know?
- Rockia is here to discuss the possibility with information technologies only and I don’t encourage people doing this.
- When on VPN connection, the internet speed is slower than usual because the data travels on a longer route.
- How can you get a VPN account? Google it!

Hey quick question
Will the VPN server decreased the quallity of the call or connection speed?
Very strictly, yes. But I found it very minor and not quite noticeable.
