Easter Eggs on Wordpress

A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine called me up and told me he worried about his WordPress was hacked because for somehow he saw messages like “Wake up, webmasters.”.  I checked through his log files and there was no sign of his blog being hacked so I comfort him that nothing was wrong, but I wasn’t hundred percent sure about what I said because I deeply understand that even secure program like WordPress could be broken through as well. However, I didn’t care about that anymore until I saw the message myself.

I was trying to set up a new WordPress simply for testing new themes, and I accidentally activate the “Post Revision Comparison” function of WordPress and saw the following output:

And it was followed by:

now I understand what my friend saw, but the screen didn’t stop here:

The whole text output is:

Self-comparison detected.

Initiating infinite loop eschewal protocol.

Self destruct in 3…

2

1

Wake Up, Rockia…

The Matrix has you…

Follow the white rabbit.

Don’t let this happen again. Go Back.

Interesting, right? This is actually an Easter Egg the WordPress developing group added in since WordPress 2.6.  If you logged in your WordPress and type the following link to your browser:

http://you_blog_address/wp-admin/revision.php?action=diff&left=123&right=123

(Note: you will need to replace 123 with your true post ID.)

You will be able to see the same thing as I saw.

Thanks, WordPress, it’s funny but I am sure that scared a lot of webmasters. :-o
