How To Back Up Your Wordpress with WP Time Machine

I have introduced how to make use of Dropbox service to serve as a remote Time Machine with Apple Backup HERE. As I write more and more on WordPress platform, I realized the backup of my uploaded files and database of WordPress is actually quite boring. I am sure someone has the same feeling as I do and that’s why Paul G. Petty came with with the plugin for WordPress, the WP Time Machine.
The installation is quite straight foward, just go ahead and click “Add New” then search for “WP Time Machine” to install.
The plugin enable you to use 3 different services to back up your files and database:
- Dropbox
- Amazon S3
- FTP
I am going to introduced how to back up your WordPress site to Drobox, if you don’t have already owned a free 2GB online space from Dropbox, you can click the following link to register one, it’s absolutely no fee and spam free:
In your WP Time Machine interface, after you choose Dropbox as your service, you can just key in your Dropbox login information:
Since I don’t want to mixed it up with my personal information backed up on Dropbox, I created a new account just for my site. And for the purpose of backing up multiple WordPress sites, I created different folders on Dropbox. For example, as you see in the above picture, I created a folder called “rockiacom” for the backups of rockia.com.
Once your input is complete, you can just click “wp Time Machine archives” to upload your files and database to your Dropbox:
When it’s done, you are able to see the following confirmation:
And now if you refresh your Drobox, you will be able to see the following files are already in your assigned folder:
This is just a one-time back up. The reason why this plugin is called “wp Time Machine” is because it actually can do multiple back up with different time stamps so that you won’t overwrite the previously backed up files and databases. This option could be simply enabled by clicking the “Use time-stamped subdirectories to store multiple backups.” right above the field where you key in your Dropbox account information.
Post Note:
It would be awesome if the “WP Time Machine” could add the scheduled back up feature on. Right now you have to manually click to archive and back up, but I am totally amazed by this plug in.
