Fix: Black and White Screen on Samsung T220HD with Nintendo Wii
By rockia on Dec 31, 2009 with Comments 12
Samsung T220HD is a very nice monitor; other than the regular DVI and VGA input, it comes with HDMI input, Component Video input, TV tuner, as well as built-in speakers. My job is to connect the Wii to T220HD and so that I can play games in my room. Yes, the screen is smaller than the LCD TV in the dinning room but this enable me to play games without leaving my room and it’s just one button away from work to gaming.

So I took out the Wii along with the AV cable it comes with. This AV cable is the normal one with 2 audio connectors (left and right) and 1 video connector. Using this cable on my 46″ Sony LCD TV is giving me no problem at all and all I expect is the same result on my Samsung T220HD. I pluged the white and red connector to the audio input and the yellow connector to the Y-video input. However, this is what I get when I hooked it up.
Despite the screen is black and white, it’s also giving me weird horizontal lines scanning through the screen. This is not the way I wanted. I started to Google around and just got more depressed when I can’t really find solutions online, for example, take a look at this thread (link broken), even DJMusicX (the experienced admin) suggested to go for Nintendo support.
With no help from online resources, I start to investigate T220HD. For Component input , other than the L and R audio input, there are actually 3 video input (G for green, R for red, B for blue). Things making more sense now, I believed Samsung T220HD will take a cable with 3 video connectors.
I then went to Futureshop and bought a Wii AV cable with 3 video connectors:
The next moment I realized was pictures was displayed nicely on my T220HD. Problem solved. I guess I just assume the component AV input on T220HD is the same as the traditional video input; yet, it’s not. It’s a simple problem, probably it’s not new to many gamers. I am writing this to give others who have the same problem.
Post Note:
I don’t know why Nintendo will send the single video connector AV cable with the Wii console, and it’s weird that it’s working so nicely with a brand new model of Sony 46″ LCD TV. As Samsung T220HD has built in speakers just like a TV, sound and video can be output directly from the LCD monitor. If Nintendo is ever going to upgrade Wii’s graphic processing ability, I think using HDMI with optical audio output will give gamers better graphic and sound experience. Oh, did I mention Samsung T220HD has HDMI and optical in as well?

You are welcome Shawn. I hope you have a great time with the LCD and Wii.
I have the same exact moniter and i have a PS3 with the same problem, it shows black and white. Can i use those cables as well for the ps3?
Yes, PS3 have same 5-colors cable too. It will work.
You are amazing, I have a new samsung tv and hope this works. Thank you for making my life so easy…lets hope
It worked! Thank you. I almost bought a new TV
I’m not a gamer nor have any of the consoles mentioned above, however I have a cable box that was giving me the same issue and your suggestions worked beautifully.
Thanks you for the post.
Rob
OMG I have the exact same problem as you had, and since I’m not so tech savvy, this post of yours really helps me! I’m gonna try your way, fingers crossed!
I am also so disappointed. I had a color Wii display for over a year on this TV, and then we took our Wii to the relatives for Thanksgiving to play, and now when I am hooking it back up, it is in black and white! Aaaaaaggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Oh thank you! I had the same problem today we got new TV’s and this thing happend to me! Hopefully this works!
Thanks in advance
i have that cable but my tv still shows black and white
I’m using component on this exact monitor and it doesn’t seem to want to display any color. I double-checked to make sure the wires went into the right ports. The luma shows up nicely, but the chroma seems to be MIA.
