I love Music — Let your desk singing with imu speaker

DSC02109Nowadays, speakers can be considered as one of the most common technological device you can see around you; just check how many people are having their ear-bug speaker on while you are on a bus. Yet no matter you have a as low power as 2W earphone or you have a 400W 5.1 channel speakers with a strong sub-woofer, the sound is most likely from the inside of your speaker. So it means that the quality of the sound is highly depends on your investment on your speaker; if we follow the formula that better speakers will cost more. :D

I received a sample speaker unit for testing while I was at work a week ago; this little guy shown in the picture just totally reversed the formula, because the speaker itself won’t play sound at all. Weird? Now let’s take a look how it works.

Typically a speaker includes the following components:

  • Magnet Structure — A radial field will be produced from two pieces of oppositely oriented magnets, from inner to outer magnet.
  • Voice coil — coils that carries the electrical current so that the current is moving in perpendicular direction to the magnetic field;and make sure the force is acting on the same axis
  • Spider — this is the essential part of a speaker; it vibrates rigidly with the voice coil and transfer the mechanical energy to the cone
  • Cone — it products pressure waves from its surface due to the vibration/oscillation of the spider
  • Basket — holds everything in position; prevents the parts moving especially the magnets
  • Dust Cap — this is the parts that you will see moving when you are looking at a hi-fi; it keeps the inner structure of the speakers clean.

So this imu speaker basically doesn’t have the Cone and Dust Cap. When the sound signal is transfer into this speaker via a 3.5mm audio cable, it generate currents and then the spider will vibrate and transfer mechanical energy to other media instead of the cone; and that means that, the speaker itself won’t play your music/sound at all because it doesn’t have the cone to produce the sound wave. However, this is exactly the fun part of this speaker because you can turn any hard surface into your cone, including your desk, your bin or even the wall.

Enough said, let’s look at some more pictures and a simple clip that I took.

Sorry about the bad quality as I am not very professional in DV shooting, but I will get myself improved so that I will be able to share more nice gadgets with you all.

I must say that, the sound quality is not very high — it’s a toy for you to play around. If you are very into music quality and looking for something more practical, then this is not for you to let it sit on your desk. :D
