Two Quick Look plugins — preview your zip files and folders instantly

Quick Look is a neat function to enable you to preview your documents instantly without actually open the file. However, when it comes to folders or archive files, Quick Look doesn’t work very well for us; what you will see is just merely the enlarged icon of the zip file or folder. I just found two plug-ins online that will make Quick Look look deeper of the folders and zip files.

1. The Zip Quick Look Plugin

You can download the file from Developer site or here.

The installation is extremely easy; all you need to do is just drag the file into Quick Look folder and restart finder.

  1. Install
    Drag Zip.qlgenerator into /Library/QuickLook/ or ~/Library/QuickLook/.
Make “QuickLook” folder If you can’t find at /Library/.
Restart Finder.app (Right click Dock Finder icon with holding Option key)
  2. How to use
After installed, only hit space bar at Finder while selecting Folders.

After install, you should be able to see the change like this:

2. Folder Quick Look plugin

Folder Quick Look plugin is very similar to Zip Quick Look plugin, just download the file from Developer site or here.

  1. Install
    Drag Folder.qlgenerator into /Library/QuickLook/ or ~/Library/QuickLook/.
Make “QuickLook” folder If you can’t find at /Library/.
  2. How to use
After installed, only hit space bar at Finder while selecting Folders.

After installed, you should be able to see this:

Note: The above plugins don’t work with Snow Leopard at this moment; we will wait for developer’s update on it. Once it’s supported, I will update my post.

UPDATE: I got reply from Taiyo, the developer.

Folder.qlgenerator will not work on Snow Leopard. Because Apple changed Finder.app not to send Quick Look pluginĀ  from folders.

Zip.qlgenerator is older version of Archive.qlgenerator. Archive.qlgenerator supports not only .zip but also .sit, .bz, .tar and many other archive style which I cant remember, Archvie.qlgenerator works on Snow Leopard.

Thanks for your loving our plugins.

We’re not going to release newer version of these. Archive.qlgenerator works well and Quick Look plug in for folders is not way to develop.

If Apple make Folder spec for launching plug-in, Folder.qlgenerator will works automatically.

I’m so bummed about the Folder Quicklook plugin. It was one of my favorites. I’m missing it since upgrading to Snow Leopard.

For zips, I like The BetterZip Quicklook plugin:

I just learned about the folder plugin for quicklook, and I was super exited…till I found out it wouldn’t work with snow leopard. Most disappointing thing since learning that santa isn’t real.

I know, same here as you Carlisle; I was so disappointed and that was why I emailed the developer and hope for something good. However, the developer couldn’t do anything unless Apple change the way it works.
