How to Create Mosaic Art Effect with Your Photos on Mac or Windows

Early this year, someone used Synthetik Studio Aritis, Adobe Photoshop and Apple QuickTime Pro to make a picture of Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple Inc.) with Apple’s products.Lots of people including myself are wondering how it was made, especially when I am not very familiar with Software like Synthetik Studio Artist. However, I found a software today and it can enable me to make effect very similar to this kind extremely easily today.SteveJobsMosaic

MacOSaicX

The software is called MacOSaiX, it can be downloaded and used for FREE here : Download MacOSaiX or you can view some more demos HERE.

All you need to do is 3 steps in total

  1. Choose your image to be mosaic;
  2. Choose your image source from like iPhoto, an image folder, or Flickr and so on;
  3. Save as one image (Make sure you selece File->Save As), you can save it as .Tiff, .JPG, .PNG and the image quality will be good if you can keep it at least 300dpi.

I personally tried it and it’s extremely fun. Let’s take a look of what I did.

After MacOSaiX

I chose one of the picture I took at Simon Fraser University, and then I use about 1600 of my other photos to make this picture, the effect is actually surprisingly good considering I use only 1600 pictures. As I am using 40×40 tiles, if I want the effect to be more obvious, I should use about 16000 at least.

It’s probably helpful when you need some sparkle idea for an important event for your personally VIP; do something special with this small free software along your creativity.

[Update] If you are using Windows, you will probably interested in another program called “AndreaMosaic”. You can Download from their official website. It’s pretty much the same process and I will take some screen-shots if I have chances in near future.
